Both poets wanted to express their views and feelings about the war.Their experiences in battle, although horrible, inspired them to write better poetry than they did before the war, and in Sassoons case, even after the war. Owen seems to be a more psychologically complex person. His poems a re often melancholy and cause people on a deeply emotional level. Sassoons poems also affect people, but they do not leave a lasting impression. Sassoons goal as a war poet is to shock, while Owens goal is to make people experience deep emotion. It is obvious from Sassoons own remarks about Owen that even he felt the total emotional and lyrical power of Owens poems. The work of each poet serves as a reminder of the awfulness of war and the effect war has on peoples lives. Dulce Decorum Est The poem Dulce Decorum Est was written by Wilfred Owen. This poem illustrates how poetry can be influenced by the subject of the words rather than the words influencing the topic. The poem uses various literary devices to show that dying for ones country can be a very ugly and horrible subject pieceting this idead into a poem, makes poetry a very ugly thing.Wilfred Owens makes use of many devices, but one of the first ones used in the poem is a simile. Bent double, like old beggars under sacks. This allows one to imagine a group of people hunched over, to malnourished and beaten to even stand up straight. Another example is floundring like a man on fire or lime. The man describe has been poisoned by gas, but he looks as though he is running around trying to put out a fire on himself. The simimle illustrates the suffering of the man and his hopelessness. The author also utilizes words that leave definite negative connotations in order to give the reader a feeling of unease and malady. quarrel such as sludge, fatigue, guttering, froth-corrupted, vile, and incurable, all have negative connotations. The words taken from the context of the poem legato do not, and likely could not have any possible positive images or ideas associated with them. By choosing such words Owen condemns his poem to being sorrowful, sad and ugly. This is likely the authors intent as he sees war, sorrowful, sad, and ugly. Owen uses these literary devices and others to range a single end. A sensory image of watching a man, in service of his country, die a terrible death. These include, the images of hunched men traveling through mud, hearing gas shells and putting on masks, a man drowning in gas, and the horrible ghastly death of that man.Owen incorporates sound with the blood Come gargling which enhances the horror felt by the reader. Wilfre Owen uses all these techniques to illustrate a simple point, that the phrase Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori, or translated to english, sweet and honorable it is, to die for the fatherland, is a lie. His poem tries to make real to the reader how horrible death is even when in the service of ones country. The statement is often made to children in search of adventure, but Owen makes buy the farm that it is indeed a falsehood.

Personality Analysis Essay Example for Free

Personality Analysis EssayMost deal understand reputation as the run into that race display and project to the outside world. However, constitution is more than this and includes even the psychological experience that is dark inside us (Ewen, 2003). The word reputation is a derivative of a Latin word-persona whos substance is mask (Ewen, 2003). Personality analysis can therefore be referred to as the comprehensive investigation of all the aspects relating to personality. For many years people have tried to explain substance as substantially as what it is that makes a person. In an attempt to offer explanations, personality theories have been locomote some of which argon the existential/humanistic and dispositional theories. Just like many other theories, these personality theories argon fallible and they cannot be proved. These theories have their similarities as easily as their differences. Dispositional theories of personality try to explain personality using su bjective tendencies. These are the tendencies that individuals are born with and they can be hereditary or not.Dispositional theorists believe that genes play a big part in determining ones personality. Words and phrases are mostly employ to reflect this conjecture (Weiten, 2010). For example when one says that someone is kind-hearted. These theories are in addition known as distinction theories and trait theorists assumption is that physique does not determine behaviour but that the stable personality traits are the ones that determine behavior. Personality traits are described as stable qualities that one displays in all the situations. These theories were advanced in reaction to a personality possibility known as type personality theory which linked human physique to new temperaments or personality characteristics. Several people are associated with the ontogenesis of trait theories and examples include Gordon Allport, Lewis Goldberg, and Hans Eysenck but the person who or iginally introduced the trait theories was known as Carl Jung (Nicholas, 2008). Carl Jung is the one who introduced the musical theme of temperaments and his theory purported that one is either born an introvert or an extrovert and that this cannot be changed.Gordon Allport described personality as a combination of both mental and physical personality aspects (Nicholas, 2008). He described personality as a dynamic organisation gist that the aspects of personality keep on changing end-to-end an individuals life in response to situations (Nicholas, 2008). These personality changes occur only to a certain degree and the personality re of imports relatively stable over time. Allports trait theory also portrays personality as naturally deterministic. This means that behavior, personality and thought are influenced and control conduct by a utensil that is inborn. In development of his theory, Allport categorized all the words contained in the dictionary that describe personality traits into substitution traits, cardinal traits and secondary traits (Nicholas, 2008). The cardinal traits are those that dominate in the whole life of an individual. People who butt on these traits are rare and people tend to associate these people with these traits. Central traits on the other take place are less dominating compared to cardinal traits. They are the characteristics that constitute the foundation of an individuals personality and are commonly used by people to describe others. For instance when one says that someone else is reasoned they are describing those people using the central traits. The last personality characteristics are secondary traits. These are the traits that apparent(a) depending on situation and are sometimes related to preferences or attitudes (Ewen, 1998). Lewis Goldberg and Costa McCrae among others expanded the theory of Fiske D. and this led to development of the big five model. The personality traits attributed to this theory are classified und er five categories. ace is extraversion where some people are social and outgoing. The second one is conscientiousness where individuals display heights levels of organization and thoughtfulness (Oliver, Robins Pervin, 2008). The third is openness where individuals display insight and imagination. The fourth category is agreeableness where individuals are trustworthy, kind, and affectionate. The last one is neurosis where individuals with this trait tend to be anxious, sad, moody and emotionally unstable (Oliver et al. , 2008).establish on this theory, individuals who have traits such as extraversion and agreeableness will get along well with people while people with neuroticism traits will not get along with people. Hans Eysenck construct on Jungs idea by approaching the idea of temperaments from a mathematical point of view. Since his theory is built on the work of Jung, then this theory also assumes that a part of personality is genetically determined. Jung verbalise that t hough it was impossible for an introvert to change to an introvert, depending on the situation one can modify their behavior (Boeree, 2009).He created a test that was used to determine peoples traits. Based on his theory there are several personality characteristics. One of these is introversion and extraversion where extroverts are outgoing and introverts are reserved. The other personality trait is emotional stability/neuroticism where individuals with a high level of neuroticism exhibit nervousness and emotional instability (Boeree, 2009). The last personality trait is psychoticism where people find it sternly to deal with the reality (Boeree, 2009). These personality traits determine how individuals act with others.People who are extraverts tend to get along well with people as they are outgoing while introverts are not social and may be viewed as unfriendly. Another thing is that people with psychoticism do not relate well with people as they tend to be hostile and manipulat ive. Humanistic personality theories approach to personality is phenomenological. This phenomenological approach focuses on the subjective experiences of individuals. The leading theorists associated with humanistic theories are Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers. These theories are known as humanistic because their emphasis is on the unique characteristics of people. According to these theories, all people have an inborn tendency to become self-actualised and that self actualization serves as the main force that drives behavior (Mitterer Coon, 2008). This self-actualisation is an ongoing process where one naturally scrams towards fulfilling their potential. Humanistic theorists take on the uniqueness of personalities as peoples perceptions of the world are unique to them. These perceptions are reflected in the way people behave.According to these theorists, peoples perceptions are not determined by their personality traits, their supporting history, or their ego development (Mitter er Coon, 2008). They further say that by nature people are good. Carl Rogerss humanistic personality theory portrays personality as being composed of structural components. These components include self, self-regard, self- elevated, and self- idea (Mitterer Coon, 2008). Of these components, Rogers says that the main component is self and it consists of concepts, ideas, perceptions, and values that define an individual (Mitterer Coon, 2008).According to him, a persons behavior and perception of the world is influenced by their self-concept. In addition, he says that in addition to self-concept every individual has an ideal self and that happiness and fulfillment are increased if the ideal self is closer to the self concept (Mitterer Coon, 2008). He further says that a phenomenal field is composed of both an individual and their world and that reaction to the world involves the individual as a whole and not merely parts of the individual (Mitterer Coon, 2008). Maslows humanistic personality theory is similar to that of Rogers.Maslow just like Rogers believed that individuals have a tendency to grow towards self-actualisation. In addition, just like Rogerss theory Maslows theory views individuals as beings whose approach to current issues and perceptions is subjective (Engler, 2008). According to Maslow there are several characteristics associated with people who have gained self-actualisation. One of these is awareness meaning that these people are very much aware of the meaningfulness of life and that due to this they are usually unendingly enjoying life. The other characteristic is that they are reality centered and this means that they are usually concerned with issues in their environment. Acceptance is the other characteristic and it means that these people accept their environment as well as what cannot be changed. Lastly these people exhibit a sense of humor that is not hostile meaning that they do not joke about others as they consider this offensiv e (Engler, 2008). All the above theories in one way or another attempt to give an explanation of human behavior. They all let in that personality characteristics affect the way people behave in different situations. It is the differences in personalities that make people to react differently to the same situation. Each theory has a number of personality characteristics which are attributed to them and these determines how individuals interact with others so that some people tend to get along well with people while others do not. World Change EssayIn my discussion I will share two important definitions of world changer and include challenges that are related to health and health care call for, with the issues that bring up to nursing. World changer can have different meanings to many different people. The one definition that I related to personally was actually a quote from President Abraham Lincoln By serving others and set others needs before oneself, only then can anyone truly impact the world with change. Abraham Lincoln (World- Changers for Resources. (2008).. he other important definition of world changer began in 1999 for my school, Indiana Wesleyan College, as a new initiative both to students and faculty and is now include in our mission statement as a commitment to changing the world by developing students in character, scholarship, and leadership. (Indiana Wesleyan University, 1999). World issues encumbrance the improving of global health with multiple challenges including health probl ems of society. In 2003 a request for these challenges were gathered and included in a working paper in the Journal of Nursing. Here is the list of identified challenges that was sponsored by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the National Cancer Institute (http/www. grandchallengesgh. org/).. Suggestions for improving education for women, addressing problems in the sociable environment focusing on reducing poverty to decrease illness/diseases. Make the world safer, the level of mortality continues to increase, including maternal and infant mortality, with premature deaths being the leading scram of death of newborns.Improve insipid mental health by providing education including sexually identity which can be a cause for suicide, which is the third leading cause of death. (Hegyvary, 2004). Prevent spread of infectious diseases manage physical and mental illnesses, and think health system and social processes. Global health can improve if everyone would take responsibility to g o into in understanding health care, make simple life style changes, and be committed to see the basic needs of others. Dickenson-Hazard, 2004) The challenges that pertain to nurses include the knowledge nurses need, the way they learn, the type of facilities and the conditions of work environments. The most remarkable contributions in the health care for nurses is to provide holistic and humane care. Edgar Allen Poes Essay Example for Free

Edgar Allen Poes bear witnessFrom the very first line written in the Cask Of Amont air sickado The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, exactly when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge. We are thrust into a beleaguer, much corresponding one you might find at the amusement park or the carnival, with the distinct difference that although this ride is in fact on rails, how it result affect us and how we will interpret the events during is completely up to us. Edgar Allan Poe does a remarkable job of employing several psychological techniques in his short story The cask of Amontillado , but I will only focus on one, which even by todays standards is flawless. The technique is the mystery. Who is Fortunato? What has he make to Montresor that has caused so much aflame and psychological damage? Obviously the answers to these questions will elude and intrigue the audience. So we are instantly on the hook. To find the answers to these questions we must avert more of our attention and interest to the patch up at hand.Poe, now with our utmost and full attention, begins to plunge us into the mind of his protagonist. Not so by simply introducing us to Montresor but instead by showing us his actions, his thoughts, his mannerisms. He accomplishes this by exposing us to Fortunato and the conversations betwixt them that will ensue. On the surface Montresor seems like a normal man with no ill will. Although quickly we begin to learn otherwise. My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met. How remarkably well you are look today. So begins the series of dialogues Song 2 and conversations that would appear to be like any other had by two good friends. At first Montresor is nothing but amicable, he compliments his good friends on his looks, dress and even praises his good taste and reputation. And yet some fools will have it that his taste is a match for your own. The audience now fully engaged in the story though the methods of mystery, curi osity and perchance even endearment or empathy for Fortunato continue to delve deeper into the event unfolding before our very eyes.Just as the protagonist and the antagonist begin to descend upon the catacombs and the h entirelys of the Montresors manor, so does the conversation and the dialogue taking place between them. We will go back your health is precious. you are rich, respected, admired , beloved you are happy, as one time I was. You are a man to be missed. For me it is no matter. We are now beginning to be exposed more openly to the sociopathic ways of our protagonist Montresor. Willingly and cheerfully guiding our abject and still at the moment helpless, Fortunato , as he is still under the spell of Montresor. When we fin on the wholey get down to the depths of the catacombs the reader is now aware that some horrible event is bound to ensure, but the conversation and the exhibit made by the writer has now fully invaded the reader. Little by little inch by inch as we descended down through the catacombs, we have been made more anxious, more uncomfortable. Now all the built up tension that has been gathering is ripe for the telling. Pass your hand Is the cue that signals the reader. We are hither, this is where our move has been leading you, here is the end. Over the wall you cannot help feeling the nitre. It is then that Poe unleashes his Single effect all done with a fine attention to detail. The message is clear. you are now here, you will go nowhere, this is where you will rest. Presumably after achieving his single effect the reader will sense a series of emotional responses ranging from fear to terror to relief. Relief that the built up tension and anxiety has now been released. The ride has in conclusion come to an end and it is now time to go home and think upon the emotions you have felt here today.

Sustainable development Essay Example for Free

Sustainable development EssayIntroductionWithout a shadow of doubt, one of the problems facing straight offs China is body of water contaminant. Maybe you go away ask, how to define water pollution? Why we go out say the water pollution problem in China is so serious? Actually, there argon many different ways to measure water pollution. For example, use instrument to test the safety train of water or by using the ph- evaluate to test whether it meets or exceeds the national streamer or not. However, we atomic number 18 not professionals. Therefore, today I will just tell you two simple ways. First, by chemical indicators, we brush aside take the water sample and measure the concentrations of chemicals that it contains. If the chemicals are dangerous or the concentrations are likewise great, that means the water is pollute. Second, by biological indicators, we domiciliate examine financial support things that water will support. If living things canister blisteri ng in the water that means the water quality is still acceptable. However, if the living things cant live, the water quality is so poor. These simple ways can test whether the water is polluted or not.CausesThere are two main reasons that cause water pollution. First is the attention. In new-made years, the rapid development of industrial and urban areas, and changes in agricultural practices. The discharge of waste from industries. The owners recall that rivers and oceans are convenient places for them to dump their waste material. However, they did not concern these waste contains toxic substances that may cause ill-use to the river and lake and also, it is harmful for humans and aquatic animals.Second, for the public, too many selfish and lazy members of the public have present(prenominal) satisfaction. This poor civic spirit, a mind-your-own-business, non-confrontational culture make the situation worse. In China, all you have to do is step outside to see evidence of a lac k of public hygiene. One popular cheer is littering. The expert litterer refuses to put hiscigarette andt, used tissue, or fish-ball stick in a bin, regular(a) if there is one only 3 steps away. It is not surprising that one day, we will live with sewage-strewn beaches and dead rivers. All in all, because the discharge of waste from industries and selfish citizens and weak enforcement of littering laws and g overnment complicity in pollution all combine to make prospects for improvement bleak.Impact on Economic Aspect, Case StudyConcerning pollution of river, algae bloom on Lake Tai has been the concrete example showing the negative impact of unsustainable practices on economic development in recent years. And the government needed to spend huge sum to vamp the situation.Taihu is third largest lake in China, covering an area of 2400 km2. It is the major source of water to Shanghai, Suzhou, Changzhou and Wuxi, Hangjiahu Plain. As the Chinese saying goes, those living on a mountain live off the mountain those living near the water live off the water. Therefore, the river becomes a major source of income to the topical anesthetic anesthetic as well. Aquaculture indus shew, hairy crabs industry in particular, is thriving there. However, the mis-use of chemical substances around Taihu has led an ecological disaster since the 80s.Apart from the industrialization and inflow of population of 20 million quite a little along Taihu, development of agriculture and aquaculture contributed to excessive nutrients inside the river. match to Liang and He (2012), the organic pollutant in water sharply rose from 1% in 1987 to 29.18% in 1994. A proliferation of blue algae happens every now and then because of eutrophication in river.Netted enclosures used in TaihuAs Qin discovers (as cited in wang, 2007) that excessive amount of bait led to eutrophication of river. Compared with that of river, the water sample ofbreeding grounds contained spicy concentration of ammonia an d nitrogen. Plus, the netted enclosures deterred the aquatic plants from purifying the water. And the slower flow of water supported hookup of chemical.Hence, the Jiangsu government annually invested RMB 2 billion for management of Taihu since the massive outburst in 2007. And 2.8 million rafts of algae were removed between 2007 and 2011 (Liang and He, 2012).According to Wu and Cai (2007), the Chinese government strictly controlled artificial breeding quadrangle then. The size of breeding grounds was prohibited to expand and limited to meet scientifically sound standard in Taihu, Chaohu and Dianchi. It was projected that the size of breeding grounds would significantly drop from 81 thousand to 32 thousand hectares in 2008, coupled with the output volume of 8 thousand tons. The sharp lower in harvest by 10 thousand tons drove price rise.In fact, besides the environment, the local government protected the livelihood of those crab farmers. After the implementation of projects, the number of hairy crab breeders was estimated to decrease to 1500 along Yangchenhu. Hence, provision of monetary compensation aside, these primary producers received knowledge transfer to shift to value chain of crab products. In short, rather than stable growth of GDP from the heavily polluted source, the local government would like to achieve long- call growth by restoring ecological balance and upgrading the development of cities.Plus, the commonwealth and horticulture industry were disallowed to develop within 1 kilometer of peak discharge of river to avoid soil contamination, in turn water pollution of river. Finally, according to Harvest Hairy Crab in Taihu, Output and scathe rose by 30%(2011), the quality of hairy crab along Taihu were dampen than onwards because of better water quality and limited production. And the Trophic state index dropped to 60.8 in 2011, compared to 62 in 2007 (Ding, 2012). Plus, as Xu reports (2008) that, despite smaller size of breeding ground of h airy crab, the better freshwater favor extract of crab seed which wouldnot lead to a dramatic drop in output but maintain freshness of produce. In conclusion, there is a long way to comp allowe restoration of Taihu because of high accumulation of chemical substances from human activities nearby. However, the human-induced eutrophication of river can be controlled by the planning and monitoring of the local governments. Meanwhile, they can lay more effort into developing high-price hormone-free crabs to meet greater and greater demand over the world while maintaining sustainability of river for next generation of Taihu. Our forthcomingWhen considering our future, it seems we have two choices. We can passively let the future happen and live with dead rivers or alternatively we can actively change our future by taking specific steps like exit together to keep the water change so the living things and people remain healthy. We benefit, or suffer, from the decisions made by us today. F or me, of course, I will choose the latter one. By doing so, there are three aspects that can do better.First, for education. I think no one will disagree that the success of government education programs is a long term proposition. We need to make people aware of the water pollution problem and its impact. Educators can teach people to clean up their act and organize activities like community beach-cleaning sessions. Also, some concern groups can work with media like television channels or short movies to produce water management programs to promote public education. Education is the key. Positive public action can make a great change.Second, for the laws. Recently, China has enacted regulations and laws to trend water pollution. However, I think the government needs to punish the offenders. New laws, higher fines, stricter enforcement are indispensable. They can force people and companies to clean up their act.Third, for the economy. Since a large amount of money spent on treatin g the polluted water. Many environmental experts agree polluter brooks principlethat means polluter needs to pay for the damage done to the natural environment. Therefore, they may fear that they need to pay more so they try to think some ways that cause less pollution.Last but not least, according to GREENPEACE, 25% of Chinas seven largest river systems, which include the Yangtze River, the Yellow River, and the Pearl River, fails to provide water which is suitable for irrigation and is considered highly polluted. In addition, 30% of the Chinas rivers and 25% of her coastal areas are considered highly polluted. If one were to take all of Chinas clean water bring home the bacon and share it evenly with the population, the amount each person would get would be miniscule.1 Therefore, to live better or not, everyone is the director. Positive action can change our future. Just start from today, tackle water pollution before it is too late.

Feminism EssayFeminist ideas of freedom suggest that outside social forces that argon repressive can corrupt an individuals desires and limits their opinion abilities. Questions about the self are important to feminists because they are constantly trying to figure out a womans autonomy. Feminist philosophers have come up with many approaches to the self.Jean Grimshaw goes back to an public debate from Aristotle. Aristotle questions what makes people do things voluntarily and out of free will. Aristotle says that that actions that originate from inside the self are desires or intentions and actions that originate from outside are not. Jean Grimshaw however questions whether those desires that come from outside are not authentically ones own desires. Feminists agree that women are deprived of their free will because men plough them as robots and this changes a womans personality. Based on the books of these three authors there is many things to reason out about the self. The self is aware of its interests, it is altered because of the interference of male domination and the only way to rightfully have a true self is to fight against those social effects of domination.A woman moldiness understand the changes they are going through by men in society in browse to reveal the self. One must und erstand the constraints that they are dealing with in crop to make independent choices to be liberated.
